FEEL - What is it? Horse people talk about an elusive quality known as "feel", but most have trouble defining it precisely even though--of course-- you can feel it when it happens. When you have it, you and your horse breeze through challenging tasks effortlessly; when you don't, even the simple tasks won’t seem to go right.
It all boils down to a simple word with a large meaning: understanding. Any horsemanship method is only as good as the degree of “feel” with which it is applied! When the horse feels understood by a human, they attempt to understand back, and a positive feedback loop is created. This recursive feedback of mutual understanding is the horse and human "feeling into" each other, looking for further communication. The language of horses is grounded largely in feeling tones and fleeting images, rather than the rational logic typical of the human cortex. Our ability to communicate in feeling tones requires clarity in our own feelings and emotions, and openness to non-rational awareness in ourselves. Without this self-understanding we cannot accurately perceive the feeling tones of the horse and we will not be able to initiate this cycle of mutual understanding. For understanding to work well, it must be clear and accurate understanding.
The HEAL approach known as "Invisible Horsemanship" provides gentle and effective principles and practical guidance for developing clarity in feeling and working with emotional energies in the horse. This approach will inform and illuminate any other horsemanship method and is compatible with all styles of riding. It is just as powerful for very experienced riders or newcomers to horsemanship. Students learn productive strategies for dealing with any emotional energy, including fear. Invisible Horsemanship has been called "the master class in developing feel and intuition."
